About

Liz Masterson

Welcome to my blog, That’ll Teach You! My name is Liz Masterson and I am a high school English and Journalism teacher in Casper, Wyoming.  I have two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Wyoming.  One is in Journalism, and one is in Secondary Education English.  My students call me Mast.  It’s a nickname that has stuck with me for twenty years now.

As most teachers know, teaching is a rewarding profession. I have always loved my job (mostly).  But like many jobs, there are some drawbacks.  The pay isn’t great, the hours are well over 40 per week, most of the students you teach are reluctant learners, and you will probably be blamed when students fail your class and not the other way around.  Sometimes teaching can feel like a thankless job.  But it isn’t all bad.  Not even close!  It’s pretty cool to teach kids new things!  And to know that they will remember what you taught them! And the relationships you develop as a teacher – Thank God for the relationships we build with our kids and with our teacher besties!  It really is rewarding to positively impact the future leaders of this country.

If teaching has taught me anything over the last twenty years, it would be that dispensing knowledge for a career has made me a life-long learner in the school of hard knocks.  And the lessons from school of hard knocks don’t  ALWAYS have to be painful. Teachers learn from both the positive and the negative experiences that come with the profession.  This blog is going to tell those stories.  I am hoping this will be a place where teachers can go to feel less alone, less frustrated, less anxious about teaching. I am hoping teachers will feel more empowered, more encouraged, and more valued and validated by my posts.   If any of this sounds like your jam, subscribe today so you never miss a post.
